Episode #4: A Woman's Work is Never Done

Original Broadcast Date:  1955-10-22
Show Plot:
Ralph comes home from work with in typical fashion and tells Alice to hurry up with his "eats" because he is going bowling. Ralph goes into the bedroom to change, only to find his bowling shirt unwashed and unironed. Next, Ralph finds that one of his socks has a hole in it. Ralph berates Alice for not doing her chores. After a typical witty argument, Alice demands that they hire a maid. In order to pay for it, she will get a job apartment.

The next scene starts by showing Ralph and Alice at the agency. Ralph wants to go to great lengths to give the impression that they are financially well-off. However, Alice wants nothing to do with deception and freely tells the agency that she has a job stuffing doughnuts with jelly. After completing the interview, the agency sends in their main, Thelma. Ralph tries to explain her duties, but Thelma ends up telling Ralph what she will and will not do, in a sarcastic manner. Alice immediately likes Thelma and tells her that she is hired.

Scene three begins with Ralph and Thelma entering the Kranden apartment. Thelma goes into the bedroom to change into her uniform. Norton enters the apartment, and Ralph is anxious to show off the new maid. Ralph and Thelma are at odds immediately, and much to Ralph's dismay, Thelma quits.

The final scene opens with Ralph mopping the kitchen floor. Norton enters the apartment and Ralph states that all four maids have quit. Ralph convinces Norton to help with the house work, and Norton begins by ironing Ralph's bowling shirt. When Ralph needs help moving a bureau, Norton helps, leaving the iron on Ralph's bowling shirt and burning it. After this, Ralph finally realizes how difficult house work is.

Ralph then devises a scheme to try to get Alice to quit her job so he does not have to continue to do the housework. Alice comes home from work, and Ralph tries the flattery routine. However, Alice does not fall for it. When Ralph finally admits that housework is harder than his job, Alice agrees to quit and come back home.
