Episode #7: Better Living Through TV

Original Broadcast Date:  1955-11-12
Show Plot:
The episode starts in the Norton's apartment with Ed modeling a dress for Trixie. Ralph enters the apartment has a another get-rich-quick proposal for Norton. Norton wants nothing to do with it becasue all of Ralph's past failed ideas. Ralph insists that this idea is a sure- fire winner. He brings out a gadget, which Norton thinks is an ordinary can opener. Ralph shows Norton that is is NOT an ordinary one, but rather the kitchen utensil of the future. It can do eight different thingsd. Ralph shares the fact that he can get 2000 of them for a mere $200. Ralph explains that is they sell each utensil for $1/each, then they will make a profit of $1800. Norton argues that they both have day jobs and neither has the time to go door to door to sell them. Ralph then says that for $100, they can get a spont on TV during the intermission of a movie. They will not hire an announcer, but rather they will do the commercial themselves. Norton is excited to be on TV and agrees to the plan.

Scene 2 is late at night in the Kramden apartment. Ralph emerges from the bedroom demanding that Alice give him the money to buy the utensils. Alice refuses and an argument ensues. Ralph explains the math of making $1800 to try to convince her, but Alice still refuses to give him the money. She asks him that if this is such a good deal, why didn't the owner sell them and make all the money for himself? Ralph counters with that the owner thought that he had to door to door to sell them, and that is why his idea of going on TV is a lot better. Alice again refuses to give him the $300 that he needs. Irritates, Ralph finally says that he will get the money elsewhere.

Scene 3 is on the set of the television studio (there is no mention of where Ralph got the money). Ralph and Ed walk on the the set in chef's hats to rehearse. Norton does not want to rehearse anymore because they have done it fourteen times already. Ralph starts to get nervous, and the two agree to rehearse one final time. During the rehearsal, Ralph breaks the utensil they are trying to sell. While trying to fix it, the producer informs the two that their commercial spot is coming right up and that they should get ready. Ralph starts to get stage fright. The producer gets the commercial started, and Ralph misses his cue to enter the stage. The producer pushes him out with Norton. Raslph forgets all of his lines, but Norton helps him along as best as he can. Norton begins to demonstrate how superior of a utensil it is. For the first demonstration, Norton cores an apple, which takes about two seconds. Ralph tries to do the same thing with the utensil, and it takes him about ten seconds. They move to the next demonstration, which is to open a can. Ralph again has all kinds of trouble opening the can, and in fact cannot get it open. He gets frustrated and tries to hit the can with the utensil. Unfortunately, he misses and hits his hand instead. During the ensuing scraming of pain, Ralph runs into one of the studio walls and knocks it downs. Thus ends the commercial, and the episode.
