This episode begins in the Kramden apartment. Trixie is telling Alice that she
is going to visit her sister. Trixie asks Alice to turn on her icebox because
it is being defrosted. Alice agrees and says that she will invite Ed down for
dinner tomorrow. However, she cannot in vite him today because she and Ralph
are going to Alice's mother's house for dinner. Trixie is surprised that Ralph
is going. Alice insists that Ralph is going, but expects him to put on his
"act" to try to get out of going. Alice explains the act in great detail to
Trixie. As soon as she is done, Ralph arrives home from work, and he puts on
the same act that Alice just described - word for word! Alice objects that
Ralph is trying to get out of going by telling him that there is no food in the
apartment. Ralph says that he does not care, and that he is too tired to eat.
A horn is heard in the background, and it is Trixie leaves. Ralph asks if there
are leftovers from last night. Alice continues to insist that they are eating
at her mother's house. Ralph argues that he is too tired. He also tells Alice
that he has his annual physical the next morning at 8 AM. Alice finally agrees
to let him stay home, and she leaves. As soon as she departs, Ralph yells out
the window for Norton. Ralph quickly changes into his bowling jacket. Norton
enters, and both men are excited to be bowling in the Raccoon Lodge state
bowling championship. Alice reenters the apartment saying, "It looks like rain,
so I thought I would just get my. . . ". She realizes what Ralph is doing, and
asks him how he could do such a thing. Norton excuses himself from the
situation and goes upstairs. Ralph argues that tonight is the championship
game, and that if it were any other night, he would go to Alice's mother's house
for dinner. Feeling guilty, Ralph yells up to Norton to call Schultz to replace
him on the bowling team. He is staying home and going to bed. Norton comes
back in and says that Schultz cannot bowl because he has to work tonight.
Additionally, there is nobody else at the lodge who can bowl over 100. Norton
feeds Ralph's ego and tells him about all of the preparations that have gone
into the victory celebration. Ralph finally gives in to temptation and agrees
to bowl.
Scene 2 is agian in the Kramden apartment. Ralph is being helped in by Norton
and another bowling friend. During the bowling match, Ralph wrenched his back.
Per doctor's orders, Ralph must wear a heating pad all night. He says that he
has a hot head and cold feet. Norton decides that he should take Ralph's
temperature. He gets a thermometer and puts it in Ralph's mouth. After a
minute, Norton tries to read the thermometer, but the light is too dim. Norton
takes a lighter out of his pocket to get more light. The thermometer reads 111,
and both men panic. When Ralph tries to confirm the reading, he too discoers
that the light it too dim. Norton offers the lighter to Ralph so he can read
his temparature. The two men realize what happened and are relieved to know
that Ralph does not have a deadly fever. Ralph says that he cannot use a
heating pad because Alice will figure out that he was bowling. He devises a
plan to stay in Norton's apartment all night so he can use the heating pad.
Norton is to pretend he is sleepwalking, and Ralph will offer to watch him all
all night so Norton does not get hurt. Alice returns home, and Ralph gives the
signal. Norton enters the apartment pretending to sleepwalk. The plan works,
and the two men go upstairs to Norton's apartment.
The final scene is in the Kramden apartment. Trixies enters, returning from
her visit with her sister. Trixie asks if Ralph actually went to her mother's
house. Alice responds that he did not because he wanted to get a good night of
sleep for his physical in the morning. Alice also tells Trixie about Ralph's
plan to sneak out and go bowling with a bad back. There is a knock on the door
and two of ralph's bowling friends enter. They tell alice how good Ralph bowled
last night and are glad that his back is better. They also give Alice a trophy
for ralph as he was the bowler of the year. The two bowling friends leave and
Ralph comes home from work. Alice confronts Ralph about his "decision", to stay
home and get rest for his physical. She asks him if he would make the same
decision again. Ralph says that he would, and then asks what is for supper.
Alice puts the trophy in front of him and says, you can start with this! |
