The episode begins in the Raccoon Lodge with Ralph and Ed playing ping
pong. Norton is looking under the table for the ping pong ball.
Becasue the ball is lost, Ralph suggests that they play again another
time. Norton does not want to because he is winning the game 19-2.
Norton questions how they could lose three balls in one game. He asks
Ralph to just give him the dime they bet on the game. Ralph replies
that noineteen points do not win the game, and that 21 points do.
Norton reluctantly agrees and pulls a cigar out of his jacket. He
asks Ralph for a match. When Ralph pulls a match out of his pocket,
three ping pong balls come bouncing out as well. Norton grabs one,
and they go back to the table to finish their match. Norton wins
the next two points and the match, much to Ralph's dismay. Other
Raccoon Lodge members enter the room and the meeeting is under way.
Ralph speaks about the membership drive. Since no new members have
joined, he suggests that the drive be extended for another week.
After some discussion, it is decided that each member should try to
recruit two people. The second item discussed is the annual fishing
trip. It is voted that all of the wives will stay home. Ralph makes
a motion that they actually TELL the wives about it this year. When
nobody seconds the motion, Ralph argues that their freedom is at
stake. Following a small pep talk, the fellow Raccoon members second
the motion, and it is voted that they TELL their wives that they must
stay home this year.
Scene 2 is in the Kramden apartment, with Ralph holding a fishing
pole. He talking to Alice, who is supposedly in the bedroom, telling
her that she cannot go on the fishing trip. Alice then enters the
apartment and it is apparent that Ralph was rehearsing. Alice says
she will be right out to make supper, and that she has a surprise for
him. Norton enters and confesses that he has not told Trixie about
the vote. When norton asks how Ralph told Alice that she was not
going, Ralph confesses that he has not told Alice yet. When pressed
as to why, Ralph says that he does not even know of Alice WANTS to go.
Alice enters the kitchen, dressed in a fishing outfit. Norton
comments that is looks like she wants to go. Alice returns to the
bedroom to change. Norton tells Ralph that he better tell Alice that
she is not going, otherwise he will be the laughing stock of the
lodge. Noton leaves and ralph calls Alice to the kitchen. Ralph
breaks the news that she is not going fishing. Alice objects, and
Ralphexplains that all of the guys voted against taking the wives.
Alice explains that Trixie is going, but Ralph interjects that Norton
is upstairs telling Trixie that she is staying home. Ralph and Alice
continue to argue. Ralph asks what Alice has ever caught, and she
quips that fifteen years ago, she caught 300 pounds of blubber. Alice
returns to the bedroom saying that she will be ready to leave at 6 am
the next morning Norton returns, and Ralph tells him that they will
sneak out at 4am.
Scene 3 is outside, with Ralph and Norton getting ready to leave in
the car. The two pals talk about how the wives are going to be in a
shock when they find out that they left without them. At this point,
the Alice and Trixie sit up in the back seat of the car. Ralph tries
to start the car, but it will not. He opens the door saying that he
will check the battery. Alice says, "Why don't you try the choke
first." Ralph tells Alice that he forgot about that, then realizes
what has happened. Ralph agian insists that Alice is not going.
Alice replies that he is not going either, because he cannot ghet the
car started. Ralph opens the hood of the car and makes some
adjustments. Norton tries to start the car, but is he is unsuccessful
as well. Alice asks Trixie for a hairpin. She places the hairpin in
the engine somewhere, and Norton is immediately able to start the car.
When Ralph tells Alice that she is still not going, she pulls the
hairpin out, and the car immediately dies. Trixie gives Ralph a
hairpin, but he cannot fix the car like Alice did. Alice asks if she
can go, and Ralph tells her that everybody voted against it. After
some more arguing, Alice gives up. She fixes the car and tells Ralph
that he he can go by himself. She and Trixie go upstairs, and leave
the two men alone. Ralph starts the car, and gets ready to drive off.
He then shuts it off, and calls for Alice and Trixie to come down. He
wants them to go fishing.
