Episode #1: TV or not TV

Original Broadcast Date:  1955-10-01
Show Plot:
The episode begins with Trixie Norton telling Alice that they are getting a second television set. Alice decides that she wants one too, but says that Ralph would never buy one. Trixie explains how she uses the "pipe and slippers" routine on Ed, and it works every time.

As Ralph comes home from work, Alice uses Trixie's "pipe and slippers" routine and tries to convince Ralph to buy a television set. He refuses, giving Alive the excuse that he is waiting for 3D television. Alice then points out that Norton makes the same amount of money as Ralph, and that the Norton's have many modern conveniences. Ralph argues that Norton buys them on credit, and he would never do that.

Norton enters the apartment and tells Ralph that he cannot afford a new television set because they are too expensive. When asked by Ralph why he just does not buy it on credit like everything else, Norton confesses that he has 19 credit accounts with the store. Ralph suggests that the two combine their money to buy one television set that they will share. Ralph flips a coin in a "Heads I win, Tails You Lose" gag. Norton loses the coin flip.

The next scene shows the Kramden's apartment with a television set. Ralph enters the apartment with popcorn and drinks. As he sits down to watch, Norton enters and changes the channel to Captain Video. Ralph changes the channel back to the movie he was watching, and an argument between the two friends ensues. Ralph and Ed agree to watch something of mutual interest, which turns out to be a boxing match. The picture is fuzzy, so Norton persuades Ralph to take the aerial into the hallway to get better reception. While Ralph is in the hallway, Norton closes and locks the door, then turns the television set back to Captain Video.

The program then cuts to Ralph struggling to stay awake while watching the late show at 1:00 am. Alice convinces Ralph to come to bed because he has to work in the morning. As soon as Ralph goes into the bedroom, Norton enters the apartment to watch the "Late Late Late Show". Loud gunshots and a screaming woman are heard coming from the television set. In a panic, Ralph runs out from the bedroom to investigate the chaos. When he sees that the noise is from the television set, Ralph threatens to kick Norton out. Alice, the peacekeeper, comes out from the bedroom and settles the dispute. The episode ends showing both Ralph and Norton sleeping in the kitchen chairs in front of the television set.
